Pursuing Athletic Excellence

With a variety of sports available to students, our purpose is to develop the Christian character of young men and women through athletics. Participating in a sport is a wonderful opportunity to improve physical skills and athletic abilities, as well as to learn and utilize lessons in discipline, fitness, teamwork, and attitude.

We use the blessing of athletics to enjoy our health and God’s creation. We also have the great privilege of letting our lights shine before men, as we play these sports to the glory of God.

Expectations for Our Zion Athletes

  • Passion: Give your best every day. (1 Corinthians 9:25, Colossians 3:23)

  • Leadership: Challenge and encourage your teammates to be their best. Lead by example. (Proverbs 17:17, Proverbs 17:27, Philippians 4:9)

  • Strength: Be mentally strong enough to not accept anything less than your best, physically strong enough to be your best, and emotionally strong enough to accept instruction and correction which calls you to be your best. (Proverbs 19:20, Proverbs 10:17, 1 Corinthians 9:25)

  • Humility: What is best for the team is always more important than the self. (Ephesians 4:29, Philippians 2:3-4, Romans 12:10, 1 Peter 3:8, Proverbs 18:1)

Why Mountaineers?

Although we don’t have an abundance of mountains in West Michigan, the term takes on a spiritual significance for our athletes. A mountaineer can be defined in two ways; either as one who is a mountain climber, or as one who lives in a mountainous region. As Christians, we believe that both of these definitions fit well with our standing in Christ.

First, we are mountain climbers in the sense that we have not yet physically arrived in Mount Zion. Until the return of Christ, believers remain as sinners in this world (Galatians 1:4). However, even now, God does not look upon us in our sin. Instead, by way of our union with Christ, we have been raised up together, and made to sit together in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2). It is through the infinite power of Christ’s resurrection that we are citizens of Mount Zion.
